Mechanical origin of martensite-like structures in two-dimensional ReS2

Abstract Martensite is a needle-shaped microstructure formed by rapid, diffusionless transformation and significantly affects the mechanical properties of materials. Here, in two-dimensional ReS 2 we show that martensite-like domain structures can form via transformation, involving small lattice deformations. By analyzing strain distribution topology as-grown chemical vapor deposition samples, find cooling-induced at /substrate interface responsible for loading essential formation. Meanwhile, effect cooling rate, flake size substrate on microstructures revealed origin transformation. The strain-induced reconstructions are rationalized possibly lead to ferroelastic effects. In view strong anisotropy electronic optical two dimensional materials like , opportunities exist strain-correlated micro/nanostructure engineering, which has potential use next-generation strain-tunable devices.
